•   I/O point features such as latching, counting, watchdogs, scaling, and more
•  Streaming blocks of data at regular intervals
•  Support for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)

SNAP Ethernet I/O systems consist of the following hardware components:

Brains. Powerful, compact, and flexible, these I/O and communication processors are the core of the system.

Racks. DIN-rail or panel-mounted circuit boards provide connections for the brain and I/O modules.

I/O Modules. Digital, analog, and special-purpose input/output modules connect to real-world devices and sensors.

Power Supplies. Compact units provide power from an AC or DC source for the SNAP Ethernet I/O system.

In addition, if you are using SNAP Ethernet I/O with an Opto 22 industrial controller and FactoryFloor control software, you need an Ethernet adapter card.

SNAP Ethernet I/O - Brains

Opto 22's SNAP Ethernet brains are compact, flexible, high-performance I/O and communication processors. The SNAP Ethernet brain is the core of the Ethernet I/O system; through the SNAP I/O modules, it monitors and controls all connected I/O points and provides all communication functions, including Ethernet networking, Internet protocols, and others.

The SNAP Ethernet brain family includes four products:

  • The SNAP-B3000-ENET brain can monitor and control a mix of analog, digital, and special purpose SNAP input/output (I/O) modules.
  • The SNAP-ENET-D64 brain is a digital-only processor that can handle up to 64 points of digital I/O on one compact Opto 22 mounting rack.
  • The SNAP-ENET-RTC brain handles analog, digital, and serial signals and includes a battery-backed real-time clock to time-stamp e-mail messages.
  • The wireless SNAP-WLAN-FH-ADS brain provides the same analog/digital/serial functionality as the wired SNAP-B3000-ENET, and extends your network to areas where it is impossible or uneconomical to run network wiring.

The Ethernet brains and I/O can be used in four ways:

(1) they can be attached to an existing Ethernet network using TCP/IP transport;
(2) standard Ethernet hardware can be used to build an independent control network;
(3) a PC or industrial controller can be directly connected to I/O using a crossover cable,
(4) or a modem connection can be made to access data at remote locations.
SNAP Ethernet brains can communicate over a 10- or 100-Mbps Ethernet link and over an RS-232 serial link.

SNAP Wireless LAN I/O

The SNAP-WLAN-FH-ADS brain extends your SNAP Ethernet I/O network to areas where it is impossible or uneconomical to run network wiring.  This compact, flexible, high-performance processor connects real-world analog, digital, and serial devices with wireless LAN networks for monitoring, control, and data acquisition.

The brain uses pure TCP/IP for transport and communicates using multiple simultaneous protocols, including Modbus/TCP, XML, SNMP, and SMTP.

The SNAP wireless LAN brain functions are identical to their analog/digital/serial wired counterparts. The wireless LAN brain also supports the same comprehensive event/reactions and multiple, simultaneous communication options as the SNAP Ethernet brain.

Used with the same Opto 22 SNAP mounting racks and SNAP I/O™ modules as wired SNAP Ethernet brains, these wireless LAN processors provide a powerful and sophisticated communications and I/O handling system.

SNAP Ethernet I/O - Racks

The SNAP racks are DIN-rail or panel-mounted circuit boards with connections for the SNAP Ethernet brain and SNAP I/O modules.

Racks are available that hold 4, 8, 12 or 16 I/O modules, and include a connection at one end for the SNAP brain.

The SNAP racks require a 5-volt DC supply that powers the modules and SNAP Ethernet brain.

SNAP Power Supplies

SNAP power supplies are conveniently packaged in a sturdy metal housing complete with on/off switch, fuse, and indicator light.  Although designed for Opto22 SNAP systems, they are also general-purpose power supplies that can be used with other systems.

SNAP-PS5 and SNAP-PS5-24DC power supplies can provide 5 VDC output power for loads up to 4 amps.  The SNAP Racks, Brains, and logic power for the I/O modules uses 5VDC.

The SNAP-PS5 uses 120 VAC input power.
The SNAP-PS5-24DC uses 24 VDC input power - ideal for systems with a 24 VDC backup.
The SNAP-PS24 uses 120VAC input power, providing 24 VDC loop power output for SNAP analog I/O modules.

All three power supplies can be mounted using the standard panel-mounting base or an optional DIN-rail adapter (SNAP-PSDIN).

  • Digital Input Modules
  • Digital Output Modules
  • Analog Input Modules
  • Analog Output Modules
  • Special-Purpose Modules
    •  Serial Communication Modules
    •  PID Modules
    •  Data Logging Modules

SNAP input and output (I/O) modules provide compact, high-density I/O, with top-mounted connectors for easy field wiring.

SNAP digital modules switch or sense either AC or DC signals. Each module includes four channels and provides 4,000 volts of optical isolation from the field side to the logic side.

SNAP analog modules provide two or four channels. They are factory calibrated and software configurable, handling a wide variety of signal levels.

SNAP special-purpose modules provide specific functionality. Using serial communication modules (RS-232 or RS-485), you can seriallyt communicate with devices such as chart recorders, barcode readers, message centers, etc.  Data-logging modules provide data storage capacity, so that data from other modules on the same rack can be stored for later retrieval.  PID modules monitor input signals and adjust output signals to control a proportional integral derivative (PID) loop, performing all PID calculations in the module.

SNAP Ethernet Modular Controller

The SNAP-LCM4 is a powerful industrial controller that provides real-time control and communication to I/O systems, serial devices, motion controllers, and networks.  The controller includes three serial ports and provides 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet and ARCNET communication options through four expansion slots.

The SNAP-LCM4 is designed to work with Opto22's Personal-Computer-based FactoryFloor software suite.

SNAP Ethernet I/O - Adapter Cards

The M4SENET-100 is an Ethernet network interface card designed for Opto 22's M4 series industrial controllers, such as the SNAP-LCM4 and the M4RTU. The card provides connection capability with a 10Base-T or 100Base-TX Ethernet network. The key advantage of the M4SENET-100 is that it operates on standard Ethernet networks using standard TCP/IP transport. A separate I/O or control network is not required for the control system.
M4SENET-100

The M4SENET-100 functions both as an I/O interface with Opto 22 Ethernet I/O, and as a host interface with the Opto 22 FactoryFloor software suite.  Peer-to-peer communication between controllers is also supported.  Each M4 controller can accept one M4SENET-100 card.  Physical network configuration follows the 10Base-T and 100Base-TX standards.  The network uses a star topology with a maximum hub-to-M4SENET-100 distance of 100 meters using solid-core category 5 unshielded twisted-pair cable.  A standard RJ-45 female connector is provided.  The M4SENET-100 automatically detects network speed and the presence of a half- or full-duplex environment.  The M4SENET-100 supports TCP/IP only.

The M4SENET-100 includes an auxilliary RS-232 serial port for maintenance and for firmware downloads.
